Biden Calls Trump's Actions "Irresponsible"
Former President Donald Trump has been found guilty of incitement of insurrection by the U.S. Senate. President Biden reacted to the verdict shortly after it was announced, calling Trump's actions "irresponsible."
Biden said that Trump's words and actions "led directly to the violence that we saw on January 6th." He also called for Trump to be held accountable for his actions.
"This is a moment for accountability," Biden said. "We cannot afford to let those who tried to undermine our democracy go unpunished."
The Senate voted 57-43 to convict Trump, with seven Republican senators joining all 50 Democrats in voting guilty. The verdict came after a two-week trial in which prosecutors presented evidence that Trump had encouraged his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Trump's defense team argued that his words were protected by the First Amendment and that he did not incite the violence that occurred on January 6th. However, the jury found that Trump's actions did amount to incitement of insurrection.
Biden's reaction to the verdict shows that he believes that Trump should be held accountable for his actions. It also shows that the President is committed to defending democracy and the rule of law.
