Officer Terminated After Investigation

Graphic Body Camera Footage Shows Physical Altercation

A Charleston police officer has been fired after video footage emerged of a violent traffic stop. The officer, whose name has not been released, was seen on body camera footage physically assaulting a Black man during a traffic stop on July 10.

The video shows the officer pulling over the victim, a 27-year-old man, for a minor traffic violation. The officer then exits his vehicle and approaches the victim's car. A brief verbal exchange ensues, and the officer suddenly lunges at the victim, tackling him to the ground.

The victim can be heard screaming for help as the officer continues to strike him. The officer eventually handcuffed the victim and placed him in the back of his patrol car.

An internal investigation was launched immediately after the incident. The officer was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. After reviewing the body camera footage and witness statements, the police department determined that the officer's actions were excessive and violated department policy. The officer was fired on Friday.

The victim has filed a lawsuit against the city of Charleston and the police officer. In the lawsuit, he alleges that he suffered physical and emotional injuries as a result of the officer's excessive force.

The incident has sparked outrage and protests in the Charleston community. Activists are calling for the officer to be criminally charged and for systemic changes to be made within the police department.
